What's This Digital Television Thing All About?

What is digital television?

Digital television is the next generation of television technology. The current system, called analog television, was created in the 1950s. DTV was created for the 21st Century by a working group of programmers, broadcasters and engineers so that consumers will get the best product. The same way computers scan photos into data files (literally turning your vacation pictures into a series of 1s and 0s); DTV changes the film and video into digital images (those same 1s and 0s) and transmits them.

Analog still works, so why switch?

They used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," but 8-track tapes were replaced by cassette tapes, which were replaced by CDs and so on. New technology does the same thing, but does it better. By changing the way TV signals are broadcast, the signals use less bandwidth, meaning more programming can be sent out over the airwaves. According to the FCC website, "That means better quality, more choices, and more control over your television."

Using less bandwidth also means parts of the broadcast spectrum will no longer be needed by the TV industry. This spectrum is limited, like a series of pipes; there are many, but only so many. DTV means television needs fewer pipes. The others can be reassigned to public safety--police, fire and paramedic services--or wireless phone service providers or other uses.

When and how will the switch happen?

It has already begun. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set the preparatory work in motion in 1996. Starting March 1, 2007, all televisions built in or imported to the US must have a digital tuner as well as an analog tuner. Many stations have already launched digital broadcasting in addition to their analog broadcasts. On February 17, 2009, all major TV stations will stop sending out analog signals.

Consumers who purchased TVs built March 2007 or after won't need to do anything; they are ready for the switchover. In fact, the switchover has gone so smoothly, most people probably didn't even notice it was happening. For those with older sets, they can buy a new TV or buy a converter than translates digital back to analog signals.

Analog-only TV sets built before March 2007 may still be available for sale; if so, retailers must to post a notice clearly stating which sets are analog-only.

What about consumers who can't afford a digital-to-analog converter?

Starting January 1, 2008, and continuing through March 31, 2009, consumers can request two coupons for two digital-to-analog converter boxes. Each coupon is worth $40.00 toward the purchase of one converter.

Will consumers need a special antenna to get digital television programs?

Consumers who currently use an antenna, either on-the-set 'rabbit ears' or a roof-mounted antenna, should receive digital signals as well as they received analog signals.

Is this related to high-definition television?

No, HDTV is a separate issue. HDTV audio and video signals are digital, but the new regular TV (sometimes called 'enhanced' television or ETV) will also be going digital. Consumers do not have to buy an HDTV to see digital-TV programming. Broadcasting programs in enhanced and high-def formats is called 'multi-casting,' which will be one of the big advantages of the digital switch.

Other useful facts:

Consumers who decide to buy a new television don't have to send their old set to a landfill; many communities have recycling programs.

Cable systems are not required to switch to digital, although many cable companies are offering digital and high-definition program packages as well as analog. Some may eventually choose to switch to all-digital programming. The FCC's DTV rules apply only to broadcasters--those who use the public airwaves to deliver programming to consumers.

Parental controls (like the V-chip) will work as well with digital signals as they have worked with analog.

Like all consumer electronics, televisions have changed a lot over the past fifty years. With few exceptions, these have been changes for the better. Digital television is simply the newest member of that list.

For more information:

The FCC has set up a website (http://www.dtv.gov) to answer consumer questions.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration or NTIA, (http://www.dtv2009.gov) can assist with the converter coupon program.

HDTV Hype - 7 Marketing Terms and What They Really Mean

HDTV merchants have two important jobs: to bring you the best technology available, and to help you understand exactly what it is. One way to help you understand new technology is to come up with a simple, descriptive name for it. But sometimes the names are a little too simple, sometimes they arent
descriptive enough, and sometimes they are downright misleading.

Here are seven common HDTV terms that can be misleading or unclear:

HD-Ready

Ready for what? "HD-ready" means the same thing as "HD monitor". It is an HDTV without a built-in tuner, so an external ATSC tuner, or a cable box, will be needed to receive broadcasts. If you only intend to use your HDTV for gaming or DVD watching, it might be better to save a few hundred dollars with an HD-ready TV.

Native 720p/1080i Display

Most HDTV displays have either 768 or 1080 rows of pixels, and a few have 900. And all HDTVs have an
inherently progressive display, so the most common native resolutions are 768p, 900p, and 1080p. So, when a manufacturer or merchant claims that an HDTV is native 720p/1080i, it usually means that those are the highest resolutions it can handle, and the input is scaled and de-interlaced to fit a 768p display. Some DLP HDTVs, however, do have a native 720p display.

HDTV Antenna

Theres no such thing as a dedicated HDTV antenna. Over-the-air HDTV broadcasts use the UHF spectrum, just like public access TV. So, any UHF antenna will work.

Full HD

This refers to a 1080p display with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and the ability to display 24, 30 or 60 full frames per second. The term is not wrong, but it implies that 720p or 1080i content is somehow incomplete. Since neary all HD content these days is still 720p or 1080i, that would be pretty
depressing for HDTV owners.

HD1080

Sets labeled "HD1080" have 1080 rows of pixels and a progressive display, so they can properly be called 1080p. But they only have 1024 or 1280 pixels in each row, so they don't display the maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. A 1080i or 1080p signal would be downscaled in the horizontal direction, changing a picture with a lot of square pixels into one with a smaller amount of rectangular ones. This doesn't alter the basic appearance of video content, but does cause problems when using the HDTV as a computer monitor.

Motionflow, Auto Motion Plus, ClearFrame, Clear Motion Drive

These are all trade names for the new 120Hz high frame rate display technology. HDTV sets with this feature will generally display motion smoother because they can show 120 distinct images per second instead of the typical 60.

1080p Upconverting DVD Player

Many DVD players claim to upconvert content to 1080p, as opposed to 1080i. This is unnecessary, since all HDTVs have progressive displays, and theres no visible difference between content upconverted to 1080i and content upconverted to 1080p. The transfer from i to p is called de-interlacing, and this task is performed by the TV anyway. The only benefit would come if its a low quality HDTV (with a poor de-interlacer) and a high quality DVD player with a good de-interlacer.

Audio Book Advantages

The times are changing and Audio Books are the way of the future. The days of having to lug heavy hardbacks around and bookmark pages are fast being left behind and with the new age popularity of MP3 players, more books are being released in audio every day. You just need to visit any online publisher to be amazed at the broad range available.

If you have ever found it difficult to concentrate when reading, an Audio Book is your answer. Instead of having to worry about background noises and interruptions, you can close yours eyes and concentrate on what you are listening to. You dont have to worry about keeping your place and getting in a comfortable position to be able to turn the page is also a thing of the past. It doesnt matter if your sitting in your favorite chair, catching some sun or lying in bed, its all easy with audio books. You can choose to play it through your MP3 player headphones so you can really get in the zone and stay focused.

Until you could download audio books, it was never possible and highly dangerous to read while driving. For some commuters, this is considered a serious waste of good time. People who travel to work have been known to choose public transport for the simple fact that they can use the time to read or study instead of being stuck in traffic. With audio books, you can get your reading done while driving. Whether you have an MP3 compatible car stereo or need to copy the files to CD or tape, you can listen to books in the car. Imagine using the ten or more hours a week you are driving to refresh and expand your knowledge?

Students are finding they can use their audio books anytime to study or access information. Any student would prefer to carry a small and almost weightless MP3 player rather than heavy hard copies of literature. Having their novels on audio file means they can listen to them multiple times with ease, learning more and achieving higher grades as a result. Many people learn best when listening rather than reading, so discovering audio books can be ground-breaking. If they are worried they dont have enough study material for an exam or assignment, they can download audio books online in minutes instead of having to wait for the book store to open.

Audio books are great for the imagination. Spending some time relaxing while listening to a story being told can stimulate your mind and reactivate your creativity. Many people are spending way too much time watching television and their ability to create their own ideas and visualizations seems lost. Devoting half your TV time to audio books instead can give you a new lease on life, as your ability to learn and imagine spreads through all areas of your life.

Storing books can be a pain in the neck! They are constant dust collectors and take up a fair amount of space. Anyone who loves to read knows how difficult it can be to keep your books in any sort of organized order and often you end up giving some away to save the trouble. Collecting audio books is so much easier! Storing them on CD means they are protected in a case, take less room and last for a long time to come. If you have the space for the files on a drive, the audio books take up no physical room at all and are easy to file and find within windows.

In the years to come books as we know them today could become obsolete. With so many benefits to the audio book alternative there will be less and less demand from consumers for normal books. You can visit publishers and bookstores online to buy and download your choices instantly, so you dont even have to leave your home. Instead of trying to remember the name of that good book you were told about, you can look it up and purchase it straight away, ensuring you dont forget. No more dusty, mildew and moth collecting paperbacks filling your shelves or weighing your bag down!

Next time you are thinking about visiting the bookstore near your home, try to download the audio book online first. You will be surprised when you see the range of classics to modern day literature that is available in an audio format. They are much more convenient and quite often lower in cost as well!

Spy Cams in Your Workplace

Does your office have a bug problem? Not the kind with six legs and hard shells. Does your office have spy cams watching you and your colleagues without your knowledge? If your answer is, "I don't know," then the real answer is probably yes.

Some offices, particularly in certain sensitive industries, have security cameras throughout the office, and all employees know where those cameras are and have a general sense of why the cameras are there. These are not spy cams; they're openly displayed security cameras, and many buildings have them.

Spy cams are hidden cameras, often in places like the break room or the conference room, or near the exit sign, to catch people leaving work early.

You work in one of two types of offices. Either you work in a business where you know that your boss would not put in spy cams and record employee actions without their knowledge, or you work in a company where you know your boss would do that, or don't know whether he would.

If you don't know whether your boss would put spy cams in your office, then you have a couple of problems. First, you don't know if you have spy cams, and second, you don't trust your boss, and don't know what he might do in a certain situation.

The spy cams themselves are relatively harmless, but asking yourself the question, "Would I know if there were cameras in my office?" can help you make some decisions about where you work, and how you interact with your workplace.

Spy cams are used for a lot of reasons, and are not necessarily a sign that the boss doesn't trust the employees, especially if the boss explains the spy cams and makes clear the purpose for the cameras. But you may find yourself wondering, based on the way the spy cams were installed and announced, if you're working in the right place.

The ASUS EEE 1000 Unveiled

There have been rumors, but now we have the facts, there is another machine in the ASUS EEE lineup. Their first machine was the 700's with its 7 inch screen and small hard drives (2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB). The 700 Surf models had no webcam, but those that weren't Surf models came with a webcam. You then had the 900 and the 901 with 12Gb Windows XP model and a 20 GB Linux model. The 900 machines are more expensive than the 700 machines but their improved webcam and larger screen more than made up for the price difference.

Now we start to see the 1000 range. There are two sizes of screen on offer a 10.0 and a 10.2 inch screen. There is also the choice of either Windows XP or Linux operating system. Its processor is an Intel AtomTM. You can have up to 2 GB of Ram and either an 80 GB conventional hard drive or a 40 GB solid state hard drive. There is also the familiar 1.3M pixel camera. Communications are either from a wireless LAN, a hard-wired LAN, or Bluetooth. The prices are expected to be higher than the 901, but will vary from country to country, and when you find them being released locally, you'll need to check them out and compared with other sub-notebooks. The weight has been kept to 1.45 Kg and this should not be too heavy for a student, housewife or businessman.

Patience would seem to be the order of the day with this machine scheduled to be released in Europe later this year, but no word on when it will be available in North or South America. I would suspect that it could be released in Hong Kong very quickly, as the initial offering of the ASUS EEE 900 sold out here in an hour.

Have ASUS got this one right?

What is the real size difference between this 10 inch screen and the 12 inch screens we have been seeing with portable PC's? Each iteration of these sub-notebooks seems to bring them into competition with the best of the small size notebooks. You'll find that their processor and hard drive specs would seem to be very slow and low. Many other computer notebook manufacturers seem ready to enter the fray with the offer of a 10 inch display. We can only speculate as to how long this segment of the market will hold up with the HP offering 120 GB HDD and Linux operating system available with a 9 inch screen and a 260 GB HDD and Windows Vista and a 12 inch screen. There seems very little room to maneuver.

The one thing to say about these 10 inch portables is that they are the maximum size of portable screen permitted to use the Intel AtomTM Processor. These processors will seem slow compared to the dual and quadruple processors now available but their low power consumption and low heat emission make them ideal for a sub-notebook.

Talking Books

My top 6 reasons for selecting an audio book
Love reading and learning but just dont have the time? Think again
Did you know that audio books are becoming more and more popular each day? For example, in 2004, over $124 million worth of audio books were sold in the UK and $120 million in Germany during 2005. Experts say that this year the market is expected to rise by 20% in Europe, and audio books seem to be even more popular in the USA.
Heres why an audio talking book is the easiest, most convenient way to read a book

1) Saving time - time is precious to all of us, but listening to an audio book can be done at any time, wherever, whoever you are and no matter what youre doing there are endless opportunities to read. You can listen while travelling to work, walking the dog, doing the housework, gardening, relaxing etc etc.

On average in the USA, a recent survey has shown that a person is driving or travelling 1 hour 13 minutes daily, contributing to 440 hours each year this amounts to a huge 11 full time working weeks! Just imagine, by simply using your MP3 player during this time what you can learn, and with the talking book sites available now it cant be easier.

2) Carbon - footprints the manufacturing resources saved on Audio book downloads as to printed matter is fantastic, eliminating great amounts of carbon emissions throughout the publishing and transporting procedure, while using less valuable materials.

3) Audio books give you an opportunity to read and learn with out having to make time, not just at the end of the day when concentration and tiredness are issues. They are a great way to fill the dead wasted moments we all experience in our lives.

4) For older, ill or people recuperating, audio books are convenient with the freedom of use they offer. This makes audio books an excellent gift that they can enjoy again and again.

5) For blind people, disabled people or people with vision impairments the talking book can be extremely helpful, giving everybody the chance to enjoy a book and in many cases enabling the only method of independent reading to such persons.
By using audio books, education can be improved by these people and development of new and old hobbies and habits, yielding personal and professional enrichment of life in all aspects.

6) Audio books can help stimulate childrens reading, this can be achieved when accompanying a paper book, following the written and listening along with the audio at the same time, helping to improve skills of communication and vocabulary. Talking books can help to increase your childs love of reading and learning.

These few benefits of spoken books of which there are many more, should convince you that entering the world of audio books is the exiting new way to read and learn.
Hope this helps and that you get as much enjoyment as I do from this media

Regards Sandra and Ted

This article was composed by Sandra & Ted Wosko of The talking book site. I love reading and learning but just never had the time. I then found out about audio downloads. To my surprise I learnt that I could easily download not just music but also books-talking books on any subject, including my favourites and the ones I have been meaning to read for years. With the freedom of listening while I am busy doing other things such as the housework, cooking gardening and travelling I feel my time is more fulfilled. I was so impressed with what I found and downloaded that I decided to start my own site so that way I could share it with everybody else. Next Gen Televisions - Time to Get a Flatscreen?

If you're one of the Flintstones, you may still be using an old-fashioned curved-screen television. It's time to switch up to one of the new flat-screen televisions, don't you think?

All types of flat-screen televisions - from LCD display televisions to plasma TVs and projector units, are superior to old screens in a variety of ways. They don't lose definition when seen from the edges, making those least-desired seats in your living room perfectly acceptable. They also have significantly better resolution than old-style televisions. You may still be able to make out the pixels when you sit close, but because flat screen television sets use digital technology instead of less-accurate analog, they have a much superior picture, either in still frames or motion. And they are designed to work well with all the latest technology, from blu-ray to HDTV.

Up until recently, flat-screen sets have been on the expensive side, and a lot of people who needed a new set were waiting until the prices came down a little. Well - it's time. Small LCD TVs cost what an old-fashioned television would cost, if you could still find them, and even the large screens are often under a thousand dollars.

Before you buy, though, you need to understand a little bit about these new technologies.

LCD TVs use a liquid crystal display (LCD). Watches using this technology in monochrome have been around for decades, but only in the last ten years have researchers figured out how to create good-quality color liquid crystal that is reliable and long-lasting. An LCD TV has a nice thin appearance, and is basically a layer of liquid crystals sandwiched between transparent layers, with a backlight behind everything. The light shines through the liquid crystals, which have been polarized to show up in the different colors for your display - and there's your television. LCD TVs, when kept dim, use very little electricity, making them great for a darkened TV room. And they are among the cheapest flat-screen televisions you can buy.

LCD TVs do have a couple of drawbacks: first, older models are subject to "ghosting", where a dim image of a previously-displayed picture can be seen through the new picture; for this reason, it's wiser to buy LCD TVs new. They may also not be the best choice for a fast-paced game, as they often have a lag time that can mess you up. Blacks aren't always as sharp and dark as you might like, another reason to view in a darkened room. And if you mistreat it, you can wind up with "dead" pixels, where nothing will display because that segment of LCD has been destroyed. In most new LCD TVs, though, these problems are minimal or nonexistent.

Plasma TVs are also flat-screen televisions, but work very differently from LCD TVs and have a very different set of strengths and weaknesses. While you can lay an LCD TV on its back - carefully - without ruining it, a plasma television can be destroyed if it is laid flat. That's because instead of liquid crystals, it uses an inert gas sandwiched between two pieces of glass to create its display. Seals more easily come loose when the plasma TV is laid flat, allowing the gas to escape right then or over time.

Provided you care for it well and mount it properly, your plasma TV will function well for years. Unlike LCD TVs, plasma TVs display blacks very well (one selling point) and most will also work great for fast-refreshing games. Plasma TVs are often advertised as having the most realistic, highest-resolution, best-contrast display of all televisions, and this is probably true in almost every situation. Drawbacks include the expense - plasma TVs are not economical to make in small sizes, so you'll have to buy a large one - and the relative fragility of these televisions.

Both plasma and LCD TVs usually need good wall mounts. The last thing you want to do with your high-def TVs is install them, only to have them fall down a couple of weeks later! Quality wall mounts for HDTVs should include very good hardware, preferably made by the same manufacturer that produced the television, and excellent directions so you can easily put it up yourself. If you are at all worried that you will not install it right, it may be wise to have someone install it for you.

DLP TVs are the third major set of television displays in use today. These are also called rear-projection televisions, and while they are significantly cheaper than either LCD or plasma TVs, they also are larger and bulkier (though not as bulky as projection TVs were in the past) and have a somewhat less impressive display. Still, for most uses DLP TVs do fine, and because the light source in a DLP TV is usually replaceable by the consumer, they have a much, much longer lifespan.

Very similar to DLP TVs are projector units. These gadgets are often small enough to carry by hand, but can project a movie-screen-size picture if they have a high enough resolution. Similar in appearance to an old-fashioned slide projector, projector units are a great choice for a small area, for someone who needs a portable large television, or for someone who wants a television without having an obvious television.

Your Home Theater

Plasma TVs, LCD TVs, DLP TVs, and projector units are all high-def TVs, as long as they have the appropriate tuner. Once you have them set up, you need to think about other components of your home theater. After all, what's a large-screen television if you have to sit in your old uncomfortable couch to watch it?

Your first thoughts should be for electronics to enhance your viewing experience: good surround-sound speakers for a great theater experience, and universal remote controls to sit in comfort as you control everything in your environment yourself.

Once you have your electronics in line, go for the last thing on your list: theatre furniture. Your home experience, with comfortable chairs that don't fold up when you stand up, can be superior to one at the local movie house. Look for spacious, durable seats that can handle spills as well as roomy cup holders and somewhere to put snacks, remotes, and anything else you habitually keep close while you're watching your favorite flicks.

SNS Designs, Inc. owns a number of websites. They carry wide selection of High Def TV, LCD TV, Plasma TV. They offer the most popular in home theatre and a number of televisions that range from Sony, Pioneer to LG that everyone can afford.

Flat Panel Displays - Beyond Plasma

The term set-top box will become something of a misnomer in the near future, as most displays will become too thin to allow a box to placed on top of them. As the price of plasma & LCD displays has plummeted and their image quality has improved, they are popping up in homes everywhere.

Although they are the darlings of the media and the generic for flat panel display in the minds of many, plasmas are about to be in a serious fight with other technologies for the flat panel crown.

LCD displays, seen on the desktop for years as computer monitors, and commonplace in smaller flat panel TVs, are finally increasing in size to the point they are becoming a rival to plasmas in the 42" 50 size range. Picture quality is similar to plasmas; however LCDs are immune to the burn-in that can affect plasma displays. This burn-in occurs when plasma units are used to display static images such as video game screens and stock or sports tickers.

Plasmas generally have an edge in the ability to produce deeper blacks and more saturated colors than LCDs. Plasmas are also better at producing full motion video than LCDs because of the response time of the LCD panels, although this difference is disappearing.

LCD TVs are a bit more expensive than plasmas at 42" and larger sizes, but they should last a while longer. Plasma displays should last 20,000 25,000 hours and LCDs should give 30,000+ hours of useful life. However, the latest generation of plasma displays from NEC, LG & others is claimed to have a 60,000 hour life. If that is an industry trend, the traditional lifespan advantage held by LCDs may soon disappear. This comes at a time when Sony and other major consumer electronics manufacturers are either abandoning plasma or reducing their plasma offerings. Others, such as Panasonic, Fujitsu and Pioneer are firmly commited to Plasma technology.

Currently Sony has a 42", NEC a 40", Sharp a 45", and Samsung a 40" LCD TV or display. Samsung also has the big one, a 46" that started shipping in early September of 2004. The Samsung 46" was the first consumer LCD video display to have a 1080 line native resolution. This allows it to display 1080p native when that format arrives for HDTV. The Samsung has been joined by Sony, Toshiba and others, to endow the mid 40" size category with some pretty solid LCD offerings. The largest consumer LCD TVs or monitors are the Sharp 65" and Sony showed a prototype 82" LCD from their Bravia line at the 2006 CES in Las Vegas.

Other technologies are on the horizon as well. One that has shown great promise is OLED, for Organic Light Emitting Diode. Developed by Kodak and Pioneer, this technology has been used for a few years in car stereo and cell phone displays. It's just about ready for prime time. Philips has shown a 13" unit, Samsung a 17", and Seiko-Epson has shown a 40" prototype.

OLEDs advantages are many. It actually emits its own light, so it requires no backlight and has better contrast than a traditional LCD. OLED displays have a wide viewing angle like a plasma display. Power usage is very low, less than 1/2 that of a traditional LCD display. At around 2mm deep, OLEDs are much thinner than either a plasma or LCD.

They have a refresh rate about 1,000 times faster than a traditional LCD, so they will be far superior for video applications. They have fewer parts than LCD or plasma and can be manufactured using a novel ink jet printing process. This promises to keep prices low as the technology is implemented. It is expected to see sub 20" displays in stores by 2006 with larger units following one to two years later.

Other promising display technologies on the horizon include SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) and carbon Nanotube. SED was developed by Canon, who began research into the technology in 1986. SED is basically the same principle as CRT, however there are important differences. The most important from a consumer standpoint is thickness. An SED display is only an inch or two thick, depending upon screen size.

The basic construction is two glass plates separated by a vacuum. One of the plates is coated with phosphors the other is mounted with electron emitters. Electrons are ejected when a voltage of about 16 to 18 V is applied to the emitters. These electrons are then accelerated by a higher voltage into a beam similar to that in a CRT display.

The visual advantages of SEDs are as for CRT displays, great color, deep black levels and quick motion response. These advantages, combined with the slim form factor, low cost and small power requirement should make for a real winner.

A unit shown by Toshiba at a Japanese trade show in April of 2005 even had its contrast ratio up to an incredible 100,000 to 1 by significantly reducing black luminance. Even if the specs were a bit inflated this would still amount to a fantastic contrast ratio, on the order of 5 times that of a traditional CRT. At one time, Toshiba indicated they would move to this technology for all displays over 40 by 2006. However, after a spectacular demo at 2006 CES by where they indicated a late 2006 debut, both Canon and Toshiba, Toshiba resheduled their release date for SED until mid 2007, ostensibly to allow them to produce lower cost SEDs.

There is another fly in the SED ointment too. On April 21st, 2005 US firm Nano-Proprietary has filed a suit against Canon in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Texas, alleging that the surface (SED) televisions that Canon plans to release violates a licensing agreement signed 5 years ago between the Japanese giant and Nano-Proprietary.

The pace of change in the home theater and entertainment display market has just kept accelerating. There are some promising technologies around the corner that will allow, as usual, higher performance, lower cost and more compact form factors. As prices for advanced technologies plunge and technology improves, it will make it even easier for the average person to have a fantastic media system almost anywhere in their home.

Is the iPod Video Really that Good?

The iPod video is popular due to its huge memory and the video playing capacity of the longer life battery. However, there are still some drawbacks to the design but whether you regard them as important depends upon your own liking of the iPod range.

The screen is bigger than the previous models which is great, but the surface is still easy to scratch, therefore you will still need a case to ensure protection.

Although the video image is excellent and the screen clarity may be easily compared to your TV set, there are still some problems with freezing video images. However, the fact that interference from sunlight or other light sources has been eliminated is excellent.

Although the battery life is improved overall, people complain that it is short in video mode. However, this is true of any resource intensive device, just ask laptop owners. You just need to be aware and remember to recharge regularly.

Anyway, this complaint can be balanced by the fact that the video is played with no flaws and looks really detailed.

The best new features of the video iPod concern the sound quality. It is clearer and louder with a bass that is stronger, my particular favorite.

Another good feature is the easy control, the video feature is generally accepted as being superb, but minor criticisms concern the interruption of the sound when switching between tracks.

The definite advantages of the ipod video may be gathered together, people point out that ipod video has a superb, thin and attractive enclosure with a great display. It also has the best sound, 15-20 hours of music, new clock and even the time in other parts of the world.

Conversely, the drawbacks or criticisms can be summarised as being the incompleteness of the video integration that suggests the experimental project aspect, absence of any new games, no changes in the interface, the smaller than expected screen as regards the video features edition and slow transfer of photos direct from the camera.

All this being said, you will find that the majority of people see the ipod video as the best music player around that has superior quality of sound and is just simply the best looking device money can buy.

After all if this is not the case then why has the Apple iPod range reached a state of almost complete domination in the portable music player market?

As a screen for the photo album, the clarity of the screen may win the competition with any TV sets screen. As a movie player, the iPod video is below the expectations, but it may be considered a great
step in the video technology.

What's the Difference Between a Reconditioned and a Refurbished HDTV?

So, you've heard about the latest buzzword: reconditioned and/or refurbished HDTVs. You sometimes see the word refurbished and sometimes reconditioned (and sometimes even the word used or second hand). You probably want to know the difference between reconditioned, refurbished, and used items. In this article I will explore that and also what a refurbished HDTV is.

Well, truth is, there is no real difference between refurbished and reconditioned. ("Used" is a different story. I'll get to it later on.) It's just that different retailers use slightly diverse terminology. Just make sure that it says the word factory before, as in factory refurbished and factory reconditioned. That means that it was repaired (if needed) and tested by factory trained personnel using original factory parts.

Many items get returned to retailers within the first 30 days. There are many different reasons for returns. Sometimes the partner doesn't approve, or it's not what the buyer expected. It might be too big, too small, not the right color, not the right size, etc. Or, it might even be broken. Whatever the reason, once it was opened and returned to the store (even if it was returned the same day for being the wrong color), it cannot legally be sold as new.

So the retailer sends it back to the manufacturer, where it is inspected. After fixing any defect, the refurbished HDTV is thoroughly tested and then repackaged. It must meet the same stringent quality-assurance standards that a new TV meets. And it usually comes with manufacturer's in-home warranties.

On the other hand, a used TV means just that "used"; a TV that has been used and the owner wants to sell it. This is the same as second hand. I wouldn't recommend buying it, though if you personally know and trust the seller, and it's for a ridiculously low price, you might consider it.

A factory reconditioned or refurbished HDTV however is safe to buy and usually sells for huge discounts. When you buy a refurbished HDTV, you get a quality, name brand TV for an incredible price.

One major thing to look out for when buying a refurbished HDTV is to buy it from a reputable dealer. The number one concern when looking for any refurbished product is if it's safe. Spending even a dime for a broken TV is like throwing money in the garbage. Find out exactly what to look out for here: http://www.squidoo.com/refurbished-hdtv.

You definitely can get a name brand, high quality TV at incredible savings! Thousands have already done so. Telling your friends and family that you bought a refurbished HDTV is your choice. They will never know if you don't tell them! It looks (and practically is) brand new. It comes with a manufacturer's 90 day warranty and yes, the warranty is in-home! Learn more about refurbished HDTVs and the most reliable place to get them. Put your fears about safety to rest once and for all.

Home Made Ice Cream Recipe for Coffee Can Ice Cream

The very best thing about having birthday cake is the ice cream that goes along with it. This delicious home made ice cream recipe can be made with a few simple ingredients and a couple of coffee cans.

Learn how to make your own yummy blend! It's so easy to make and fun to eat! A great hands-on kids party activity!

There's always room for ice cream. (That's my motto!)

Home Made Ice Cream
Recipe

1 lb. Coffee Can

3 lb. Coffee Can

1/2 cup Rock salt

1 pint Half and Half

1 1/2 tsps. Vanilla

1/3 cup + 2 tblsps. Sugar

For flavored ice cream, choose one:

3 tblsps. of your favorite flavor of instant pudding

1/3 cup of fruit (such as, bananas, strawberries, peaches)

3 of your favorite cookies, crushed into pea-size pieces

1/4 cup finely chopped nuts

METHOD:

Mix the first three basic ingredients together and pour into the one pound coffee can. Add flavorings if desired. Place the lid on securely and set inside the three pound can.

Add ice, and alternate layers of ice and salt outside the small can and inside the large can. When totally full, secure the lid on the large can. You may wish to add duct tape for good measure.

Now here comes the fun part! Place a sheet on the floor or wrap the can in a large towel. Let party guests roll the can back and forth for at least 10 minutes. Open the cans and check the ice cream.

If it is not starting to freeze, replace lids and roll 10 minutes more. The ice cream should be frozen to the sides and bottom of the can. If not thick enough, place in freezer and check every 10 minutes or so.

YIELD: 2 cups ice cream

Note: This recipe can be effected by temperature,
humidity, and other environmental factors, so make a trial run before attempting
in a group setting.

Mini DV Reviews

Buying a Mini DV cassette tape, player, recorder, or camcorder can be a difficult job. With so many products flooding the market, choosing a Mini DV device that suits your needs can be tough. Also, for those who are not exactly computer geeks, the jumble of technical words found on most product brochures can be intimidating as well as uninformative. The best way to get around this problem is to look up Mini DV reviews on websites and journals dedicated to electronic items, specifically consumer electronics, and also ask questions on their online forums.

There are sites dedicated to particular electronic items. For example, if you are looking for information on Mini DV camcorders, go to a website for camcorders, like CamcorderInfo.com. It compares the features of a Canon DC 10, for example, to those of a Sony product. Not just that, these websites compare price, performance, battery life, and weight of these products. The products are reviewed by gadget experts as well as ordinary users. So you can get a first hand account of how the features actually work.

Most websites follow a rating system for products reviewed. A Mini DV recorder, for example, might be rated on a scale of 1-10, or be awarded two stars out of five. All websites and magazines follow their own system of rating and reviewing and a prospective buyer needs to go through many websites before settling for a product. DesiTechnica.com, for example, reviews Mini DV products by brands and prices. Other websites may review products based on brands, or use (like professional/amateur videography).

Surfing through these websites will give you an idea of the latest products being sold, their pros and cons, as well as a comparison of their features and prices. On CamcorderInfo, for example, Sony appears to be the favorite brand for most Mini DV camcorder users. It is recommended for its multi-feature settings and low price, as well as compact design. Panasonic Mini DV recorder is the choice of amateur users, and JVC is a bestseller when it comes to Mini DV decks.

It is good to consult these reviews before purchasing a Mini DV product you may have seen in airbrushed ads and glossy brochures, but which may disappoint you once you actually start using it.

Mini DV provides detailed information about mini DVs, mini DV camcorders, mini DV conversion and more. Mini DV is affiliated with DVD R Duplication.

Grand Theft Auto (GTAIV) on PS3

Grand Theft Auto IV (GTAIV) on PS3 is a game with an amazing and nonlinear storyline, a game with a great protagonist who you can't help but like, and a game that boasts a large selection of online multiplayer features in addition to its lengthy story mode. Of course, it is not without some flaws, but GTAIV is undoubtedly the best Grand Theft Auto yet.

The Grand Theft Auto IV on PS3 story starts with Niko Bellic stepping off a boat in Liberty City, which is modeled after New York City. Right away, you get the sense that Rockstar North's latest GTA offering is something very special. Yes, this is another Grand Theft Auto game in which you'll probably spend most of your time stealing cars and gunning down cops and criminals, but it's so much more than that. You will find that Niko decides to help out Roman with his rundown cab stand and keep thugs off his back until he can figure out how to make money and connections in Liberty City. You also get to discover the real reasons that Niko left his homeland.

So begins Grand Theft Auto IV, the newest - and easily the best - entry in the wildly popular GTA series. The game manages to take the tried-and-true already successful game experience , which involves taking missions to earn cash and climb the corporate ladder of a criminal operation or sightseeing in Liberty City, and turns it into something that feels completely new and updated. Some even claim that it a gaming masterpiece that is a picture-perfect snapshot of the underworld of today's big cities

When the pedestrians, cars and buildings became repetitive in previous GTA releases it was always tempting to get bored, steal a cop car and end up in your own North Hollywood shootout. There are many more times as many distractions in GTA IV, including working cell phones, televisions that can flip channels and the Liberty City version of the Internet. This time, the mundane is as interesting as the some of the unsavory elements of the game.

But that's not to say it's empty of meaning. GTA IV is a crass cultural commentary that mocks the American media's obsession with sex and violence and money. This is the reason why so many people in the media and government are bothered by the Grand Theft Auto games. For example, the Chicago Transit Authority pulled 385 ads for the game from its subways, but the same organization has no problem letting violent films advertise in the same places.) If these people actually played GTA IV, maybe they would realize that not all videogames are for kids and ultimately get the joke - that the game also rejects the violence, sexism, and consumerism it appears to embrace. It is worth mentioning that Grand Theft Auto IV is definitely for a mature audience.

In case you haven't guessed already, Grand Theft Auto IV on PS3 is a game that you will have to play to appreciate it. The single-player game, which you can still play long after you complete the story, is the series' best by far, and the multiplayer features are good enough that you'll likely have no problem finding people to play with you for many months into the future. The minor flaws that you'll experience are no different than those in previous GTA games, and they're greatly outnumbered by the new features that will amaze you anytime just when you think you have already seen everything that the game has to offer.

You can avoid the long lines waiting to buy Grand Theft AutoIV (4) on PS3. Besides, it is sure to sell out at your local store. Why waste your time? Where to find the best deals on Grand Theft Auto?

Balancing Family and Work

You strive to be a good parent, to be available for your children when they need you. And you try to spend an adequate amount of time with them. You also enjoy your work and strive to be a productive, well-regarded employee (not to mention that your family needs the money). You know you must maintain some sort of balance between your work life and family life, even though at times this seems an impossible task.

Over the last ten years, the working world has changed. Women and men now have more options in how, when and where they work. Lets explore some of these work options. Maybe one of them can better your current work-family situation.

FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Full-time employment used to mean working eight hours a day for five days per week. Full-time employment now includes any work over 32 hours per week, no matter how many days it is divided over, or where the location of the employment is.

One newer type of full-time employment is flextime. According to HR Magazine, the magazine of the Society for Human Resource Management, flextime allows employees to take advantage of a range of starting and ending times for the workday. Some companies give employees the option of starting anywhere from 6:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and of leaving eight and one half-hours later. Often with flextime there is a rule that all workers must be present between a core group of hours, such as 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Another full-time work option is the compressed workweek, which HR Magazine defines as allowing employees to condense their work week into fewer days. This is often done in what is called a 4-10 configuration of four 10-hour days each week; another common compression scheme is the 5-4/9 (nine 9-hour days over the course of ten work days.
The third non-traditional full-time work arrangement is telecommuting, which HR Magazine describes as employees working at home or some other decentralized location during part or all of their scheduled hours. New technologies have made telecommuting a popular option for companies and employees, though some occupations will never permit telecommuting.

PART-TIME WORK

If full-time work seems to take too much time away from your family, perhaps you are considering part-time employment. Once again, there are many options.

One type of part-time employment is permanent part-time, which HR Magazine defines as steady part-time employment, usually for a set number and configuration of hours each week, usually under 30 hours. Permanent part-time may mean working five days a week for six hours or less a day, or may mean working two or three full (8-hour) days a week.

Another type of part-time employment is job sharing, which HR Magazine defines as an option that allows two people to share the responsibilities of one full-time position. This option is often available when a company wishes to keep a valued employee who seeks reduced hours but holds a job requiring full-time coverage. For professionals, job sharing can be an attractive work option for keeping on the career track while spending more time with family or pursuing more education. But to get job sharing to be a positive experience for the company and the job-sharing employees, both people need excellent communications skills and a teamwork attitude.

The two other types of part-time work include contract workers and phased or partial retirement. Contract workers are hired either full or part time on a temporary or as needed basis, either for a particular project or during a rush season. Local department stores hire seasonal, part-time employees, especially during the winter holiday season.

Phased or partial retirement part-time is when an employee about to retire cuts back his or her hours to part-time. When retirement is phased, the hours are reduced according to a formula over a set period of time. Partial retirement, on the other hand, resembles permanent part-time employment, according to HR Magazine. Both partial and phased retirement can start out as job shares, with a former full-time employee training the job sharer to possibly eventually take over the position.

When thinking about your employment situation, keep these thoughts in mind:

More time at home doesnt necessarily mean your kids will spend more time with you.

Only you know what amounts to an adequate balance between home and work.

There is no right amount of time to spend with your children, beyond some quality time each day, where you continue to get to know each other and enjoy each others companywhere you learn together.

Only you know if your children need more time with you, and if you can afford to live on less money.

So the next time the baby pulls on your pantyhose, think of your options and then exercise what is most appropriate for you.

Digital or Film Pictures - Which is Best?

When taking pictures in the past you simply used a film camera, everyone had a film camera and they either took it to the local processor to get the pictures developed or they learned to develop their own film.

Today you have a choice, digital or film pictures. Anyone who is more familiar with using a film camera may wonder which one is best? There are pros and cons to using both digital or film photos.

The Pros to Digital

Most people find that digital cameras are great. You get instant access to the pictures, you can see the pictures immediately after taking them and decide whether you will need to do a re-take. After taking any pictures you can easily download the pictures to your computer.

The pictures are easily stored on your computer. At any time you can choose to enhance them or print them out on your printer. You can take hundreds of pictures with your digital camera and store them on a disk. Compare that to the number of film pictures you have had developed and are now stored in boxes in your home.

The Cons of Digital

There are several cons to having a digital camera. For starters, your pictures can easily get lost. After taking many pictures, you download them to your computer and then never really do anything with them. Unless you do a back up of the photos, there is always the chance that your computer will crash and you could lose hundreds of your cherished pictures.

Some people think that digital photos do not offer the same look and feel as the film photos. This is one of the reasons why many professional photographers are still using film over digital cameras. If you decide to print out your pictures at home it can become somewhat costly. To do this you will need good quality printer paper and colored cartridges, these things can add up and become pricey.

The Pros of Film

Many professional photographers still prefer using film cameras. For anyone taking pictures as a hobby, with a film camera you are able to make adjustments to get the exact look that you desire. With the smaller digital cameras this is not always possible. Using a film camera, a person is forced to have their photos developed soon after taking them. The pictures are then readily available to look at and not stored away on a disk.

The Cons of Film

Film cameras are not as convenient and so are losing popularity. You are not able to view your pictures before getting them developed. Some pictures may not have turned out the way you would have liked but you have to get the whole roll developed anyway, paying for pictures that you really do not want. You are not able to go through your pictures and delete the bad ones before getting them developed as you can with a digital.

There you have it, which one is best, digital or film pictures? One is really no better than the other; the choice is more of a personal preference.

For example, I prefer the digital because then I have the option to view my pictures right away. In the past, I have taken my film in to be developed and became very excited when picking them up, only to be disappointed to see pictures of people with their heads cut off, fuzzy pictures and so on.

Consider both digital or film cameras when looking to purchase a new one. Weigh the pros and cons and make your decision based on what is best suited for your needs.

How to Find Out What is the Best LCD TV

If you are thinking of having a home theater, then it is a great idea to have an LCD TV. An LCD TV has a wide screen which makes you feel that you are part of the movie that you are watching. Of course, if you are decided to buy an LCD TV you would certainly want the best one that you can get. Having a home theater is one of the best things life can offer especially if you are fond of movie marathons. Here are some tips in choosing the best LCD TV:

1. Do not buy used LCD TVs. You never know what could be wrong with that used LCD TV. Yes, you had a great deal with it. You thought it was a great buy. But it can go wrong along the way and instead of being able to spend, you will have to buy another TV. After all, you can find good price for a brand new LCD TV and it is better since you will assured that it is going to work out the way you expect it to.

2. Know the features of the LCD TV. Quality must not be sacrificed for quantity. Normally when we shop, we usually look at the price first. However, it is also important to pay attention to the features. Make sure that the price that you are going to pay for the LCD TV will be worth your money.

3. Canvass prices. Compare prices in different stores. It is also important to do this if you want to be able to get the best LCD TV. Different stores may have different prices. So do some survey on other stores first because the LCD TV that you want to buy might be priced cheaper at another store. In this way, you will be able to save more money.
Keep these three things in mind when buying an LCD TV and you will surely not regret it.

Plasma TV Calibration - Buy? & Why?

When it comes to Plasma TV calibration, there are a few options that you have as a consumer. The first is to ignore the fact that your TV is not producing the colours that it is capable of, and maintain the fact that you and your company have become a little colour blind with the passing of years. The second is to pay a professional calibration technician to get the best out of your plasma TV, and the last is to purchase a calibration DVD. This later choice will without any doubt, make the difference between an acceptable result and a good result.

If you are attempting to solve the issue of your Plasma's performance, and have undoubtedly accepted the fact that you are not colour blind, there are a few DVDs out on the market that are directed towards Plasma enhancement through calibration. You can make an attempt at resolving the issues your Plasma may have by using DVDs with movies as a reference, however a calibration DVD will give you an edge over doing it yourself without a good reference. It will also speed up the whole calibration process. We highly recommend you to spend a few bucks on a DVD like this, is definitely worth the money. Now it's just a question of which one.

Let's look at the benefits that you will achieve through recalibration.

Calibrating your plasma TV gives you four things:
1. More vivid images optimized for your environment and preferred lighting conditions;
2. Longer lifespan for your beautiful (and expensive!) TV;
3. A few more dollars off the monthly power bill
4. A comfortable experience for your eyes and senses.

The Calibration DVD Choices

Plasma TV calibration has been made a lot easier by simply using a calibration disc. Here are some of the reasons why they save you a lot of time:

They provide you with step-by-step (sometimes divided into "Chapters") guides in tweaking the individual settings of your plasma display. For example, one chapter deals with brightness, the other with sharpness, and so on.
They provide you with test patterns (e.g. PLUGE), images, and real video for easy adjusting.
They also provide audio calibration.

Here are some of the popular (and affordable) calibration discs out there:

AVIA
DVE
Monster/ISF
GetGray: (you'll need to download this from the Internet and burn it onto a DVD)

There are some notable comparisons between AVIA and DVE, which have become the more popular choices made by plasma owners, but the most relevant difference is the cost factor. Nonetheless your friends will no longer ask each other if they noticed the green faced people during the football game on the TV at your house, and whether or not they had painted their faces the colour of the grass, which is in all fact a possibility. You may also be asked to host the next weekends TV night at your house on a more regular basis, if your recalibration goes right. So, give in to the necessity, buy a DVD and simply calibrate your Plasma TV. After all, the striking colours are what you paid for in the first place!

Luggage Sets - 6 Reasons to Buy

My friends Ryan consulted me on his travel plan in Hawaii. I've been traveling to many places and he regards me as a master hand. In fact, his plan was perfect except for one thing, apparently, he neglected the luggage. I know well about what quality luggage means to starter travelers, but it might be a little hard to explain this to Ryan (He is a computer geek). I think there must be some connections between his interests and mine. So I made a detailed comparison of buying brand computers and buying luggage sets.

Reason #1: Once and for all

A brand computer comes in bundle to achieve full functions like printing or scanning. Much similar to that, a luggage set offers varieties of cases, and bags of various sizes for holding valuables and daily-necessity. The number of luggage in a set depends on the price but normally a set offers two uprights of different sizes, and one carry-on luggage, which is usually in coherent colors and has the same design with the main suitcases. Some luggage sets provide more, including totes, garment bags, even backpacks. Getting ready for an extended trip abroad means you have to pack everything. Therefore, I recommend to buy a luggage set, saving the troubles to shop store by store, or paying for the shipping one by one.

Reason #2: Scale effect

Like buying a computer, you will find the whole price for a luggage set is much cheaper than buying one buy one. This is scale effect: the more you order, the less you spend. I ordered Heys' Xcase set from LuggageGuides as a gift to my boyfriend last summer, and I was surprised to find if I bought the two pieces separately, I would have wasted $26.32 (7.3%). Lots of examples! Bucks are really heard to earn, so save money by purchasing a luggage set.

Reason #3: Quality guarantee

Brand computer manufactures offer quality guarantee, and guarantee is also essential to luggage. Don't be surprised if you happen to see your luggage is being thrown around at the airport transportation. The airlines treat your luggage in that way, and your luggage may ends up with broken wheels or scratches. I know lots of complaints about the short life span of their luggage, so the best way is to buy the luggage under big name, and buy a set. Brand luggage producers offer better services to luggage set buyers and longer quality guarantee.

Reason #4: Coherence

A computer looks weired when it has a complete new wireless keyboard and a dirty Microsoft BUS mouse next to it. The same with luggage! A brand luggage comes in coherent colors and style. My daughter feels famous and turns millions of head when traveling with her chic pink "CatWalk" uprights and her carry-on in the same style and color. Everyone wants to be their best in public and of course, you can turn to luggage sets as some of them are stylish and classy - also the reason why people rate them high.

Reason #5: Multi-functionality

Keyboard for input and monitor for output ... Seems each component is unique and has specific function. Write a Must-Pack checklist, and you'll find tons of belongs to pack. An upright is for clothing of both formal and casual, a tote bag for pairs of shoes, a business cases for passport, essentials, and other valuables, a computer case for laptops and other digital devices ... Each piece holds different categories and you can simple achieve multi-functions. Buy one set and hold all!

Reason #6: Made for you

Some people like to build computers while others are looking for brands. To buy the right one you need is a wise policy. In the luggage market, you will definately find luggage sets from 2 pics to 5 pics. They may differ in price. For an extended long stay, a 5-pic luggage is an ideal choice, while for weekend runaway, you may probably purchase a 2-pic. There are also numerous options and you can choose the one that is made just for you.

Advantages of Down Pillows

Down pillows are stuffed with feathers inside and this does not go down well with people who are allergic to feathers. According to research studies that have been conducted over the years, it does not however mean that other pillows are less likely to cause allergies but it is advisable to avoid those things you are allergic to because prevention is better that cure. Scientists say that one can only use such pillows if they are washable in hot water. Down pillows are most definitely hard to clean because they require some special type of cleaning.

Human beings are in nature alternative-seeking creatures and for this reason you will find that the original pillow has become less popular and has been replaced by its synthetic counterpart which is more widely available. The synthetic one is also made from a vert soft material that does not store up heat within itself and thus does not become uncomfortable to use during summer. However they are quite comfortable and warm during the cold season.

Another advantage of this synthetic pillow is that it is easier to wash than the natural one. To buy this pillow, it will be good for you to look around and see what is on offer. the Internet would be quite a resourceful place for you to find this information. you will also find that most decoration shops will also be selling these pillows. So the next time you need to shop for them, you do not have to go far, look in your local departmental stores.

Secret Tip Number 3 In Digital Photography

Okay now I know you are wondering what the third secret to digital photography is....

I think I'll wait till next week to tell you....just kidding! I'll tell you now.

Its technical ability. Is that all? You say. Well my friend, learning what things mean what on the camera feels like it can take a lifetime, so here are some simple ways to help you learn to refine your digital photography skills. Once you have the artistic side of digital photography covered, you can then fine tune the artist in you and work that camera.

Just before I explain the digital camera in more details, firstly I want to say this about digital photography; you need to learn the technical aspects of the digital camera so that you can become the master and controller, not the other way around. When you first start out in digital photography it feels like you are at the whim of the digital camera and it controls your digital photography. Once you start learning what does what on the camera, you'll find that you become the master and controller.

Lets look at the common terms in digital photography and simplify them into plain English. (God knows you will be forever looking at the camera manual thinking "what the heck does that mean?" So read this instead...)

Hey the only thing I knew when I started digital photography 6 years ago was what a lens cap was so if you don't know the basic stuff please don't feel bad. That's why I am here; to help you.
Firstly to be good at digital photography you must first understand how the camera works. Your digital camera is a brilliant device and is very much like the human eye. There is an "eye lid" and a "pupil". The eye lid blinks open and shut- this is how the shutter speed works. The pupil- how far the lens opens to let light in is the aperture. The flash works as a torch light. It is a direct source of light to provide more light where the camera needs it. You can use this anytime of day or night.

So with that basic analogy we can define some meanings. Don't get too stressed about trying to remember these things, just remember the basics of how the camera works to begin with, then eventually these things will become more and more attainable to you.

Exposure: This means, basically, the total amount of light falling onto the sensor in your digital camera. The way this is "measured" is by calling the level a "value." Or in shorter terms for digital photography its called an "E/V". The more E/V registered on your digital camera the more light is getting in. Think of it as a higher E/V means a higher concentration of light going in the camera.

On my Sony brick...sorry I mean my old Sony Cyber shot, if I take a sunset shot and need to have more light in the picture then I'll increase the E/V to +2.0. If it is a sunny day, like a bright summers day and I want to stop the picture from being overexposed and reduce the amount of light coming in to the digital camera, I'll reduce the E/V to -0.3 for example.

These numbers simply pertain to my camera, so don't worry too much about them, but just understand the principle. The lesser the E/V number the less light. In effect you are making the pupil smaller so less light comes in and vice versa.

Aperture: The aperture means the actual size of the opening of the lens. It's a lot like exposure but relates to size more than anything. Think of this as the opening itself and controls how much light gets into the cameras sensor.

Shutter speed: This is the eyelid, if you like. Its the speed in which the eye lid blinks open and shut. A fast "blink" means you can freeze time and capture fast action shots such as a person running without blur, or cars racing without blur. So really it is the measurement of how long the shutter is open when the digital photo is taken.

You will see sometimes 1/125th or 125 for example. This means that the shutter is open for 125th of a second. The higher the amount of time, the longer the shutter stays open. So in digital photography picture-taking terms if you want a blurry effect then leave the shutter open for a second to ten seconds and see the difference in effect. The quicker the shutter is open, the more you will capture, such as race cars or peoples fast action suspended in time without blur.

Lag: I just know this as "pain in the butt". Its the time delay between when you press the shutter button and when the camera actually takes the photo. It's been the problem with digital photography until recent years when the dlsr cameras have almost reduced this altogether. The higher priced cameras have very little lag.

Flash Fill: This is a saviour for day photos where there is over exposed and underexposed areas in a digital photo- in the same photo. Imagine a bright sunny day and you take a photo of someone on the beach with the sun behind them. The digital camera will actually "see" the bright sky and keep that in focus and reduce the light on the persons face. To combat this you can use the flash to compensate for the camera "forgetting" about the persons face. Its the best thing since sliced bread. This is how you get shots of people blowing out birthday candles and are able to see their faces clearly.

Rule Of Thirds: When I first started digital photography I thought ; "Gee I mustn't take that picture unless I abide by this principle." Well that didn't last long. Now I don't even think about it. But this principle in photography should be called a guideline, not a rule. However when you are just starting digital photography its great to learn- it really helps you.

This website describes it better than I can. (www.digitalpostproduction.com/Htm/Features/DigitalVideoGlossary.htm)

"This rule takes our rectangular shape and divides it into thirds. The key elements or objects in a composition should fall on one of these thirds lines. The one point on our photograph where the viewers' eye comes to rest should fall on one of these lines where both a horizontal and a vertical line come to rest."

Okay so that is about it for now. Just focus on those things in your digital photography and the rest will come with time and lots of practice. The best way to become good at digital photography is to let your heart take over, just relax and clear your mind and allow the artist within you to surface and then things will fall into place.

There is more in "Digital Photography Success" of course so if you want to have a look and learn more about how to become skilled in this highly addictive hobby then go to www.digitalphotographysuccess.com.

My best to you,
Amy Renfrey

PSP or Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. These are the new-generation handheld systems. Which is more entertaining? The dual-screened, touch system, or the UMD entertainment all-in-one?

First I'll start with the Nintendo DS, it's got a cool-techno-slim design and stores it's games on cards which look similar to SD's. It has two screens (one being a touchscreen) and comes with a stylus to use. It also has built in Infa-Red and a slot to insert your Game Boy Advance games.

The Nintendo DS has a great library of games, and whats better it can play GBA games. You could chat to your friends using a program called "Pictochat" and download homebrew software from Nintendo to play. Not only that but the backlighting and the battery weren't that bad.

This system is for people who aren't interested in playing films or MP3 music or want to wait that long for their games to load. In proportion, this game beats the PSP in terms of game-loading and library of games. I say they draw around the line of gameplay.

The only things I personally don't like about the NDS is that it cannot play GB or GBC games, the A and B buttons are the wrong way around (in comparison with the GBA/GBA SP) and the touchscreen is very delicate and can be broken after long periods of use.

Now to the PSP:

The PSP is the all-in-one entertainment system. Movies, MP3, MP4, Internet, Wireless Play, UMD, USB and all that. Plus it has SmartCard SD storage and can run a lot more homebrew software than the NDS.

However there is a lot of downfalls to the PSP. Such as the library of games, sure there is some good games, such as Pro Evolution Soccer 5 and Dead or Alive, but there isn't much choice if you're after Adventure or Platform and not GTA-style or FPS games.

The loading time is a bit horrible as well.

One of my favourite things about the PSP is the USB connection, you can download MP4 movies or MP3 music or even some of your photos onto it, or even homebrewsoftware from the Internet. Trust me it's better than having to get UMDs when you can convert your DVDs into MP4s and place them onto your PSP.

Now it's the end. It's your choice now, what one do you prefer? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks ever so much for reading!

Have You Heard of the Sega Bass Fishing Game?

Bass fishing games are nothing new to the arcade game market. Sega Bass Fishing has long been regarded as one of the best. Originating in the 1990s, millions of people have played the game. The makers of the Nintendo Wii have come up with a new version that is now considered one of the best bass tournament games that money can buy. Many players find that it is so realistic it conjures up fishing memories from their childhood.

The bass fishing game for the Nintendo Wii is rated E for everyone, and has several different modes, including arcade, practice, tournament and nature modes. Practice mode helps improve the player's skill at the game, which will better prepare the player for tournament mode. Bass tournament mode allows the player to fish in ten different bodies of water, and allows the player to compete in such a competition.

Arcade mode is basically an original version of the game. Nature mode allows the player to casually fish in a body of water, without a time limit or any other restrictions. Whatever mode of play you choose, this game can be quite fun and offers several hours of fishing "play." The different modes of play add to the charm of the game and will keep you from becoming bored.

Sega Bass Fishing is an easy game to learn and it is fun. The controls are quite simple. You just fling the Wiimote to cast the line. After your lure is in the water you can work it by wiggling the Wiimote. Reeling the line in is simple with some easy motions with the nunchuk.

You can accumulate different types of fishing tackle by catching fish. Once a fish is hooked on your line, you can successfully reel it in by watching the tension of the line with a gauge that is on your television screen. A fish stands a good chance of getting away if you are not careful and your line breaks.

If you have a Nintendo Wii, then you must think about purchasing the Sega Bass Fishing game. It is a much more advanced version of the older games. The graphics are much better than the older versions as well, and the ambiance is great.

While there is no plot to it, the game is still very fun. Playing the Wii version of this game will surely help you to remember the fishing games that used to be in the arcades.

Solar Energy - Clean and Cheap Source of Power

Conservation of power is one of the major calls for the nation today because of the many problems that we are facing today on energy consumption and other issues related to it. Global warming, energy crisis, pollution, high cost of commodities is just few of the issues that are seen on news reports and other kinds of media such as the Internet. Concerns in the shortage of non-renewable sources of power generation poses future power shortages. This is due to the huge and fast consumption of electricity.

It is true that we have responsibilities on the environment that if we try to be more involved in that responsibility, we can attain better results such as cleaner environment, lesser energy consumption of non-renewable sources, and more savings in your personal budget. This can be possible by using an alternative source of energy which is cleaner and safer than any other sources.

Solar energy is one of the most suggested sources of electricity that the government has been suggesting. Aside from the fact that it is environment-friendly, it can also be the easiest to install at homes. Since the main source of its power come from the sun, it will not harm the environment and you can even save much by cutting your electric bills if you use it as an alternative source.

Anyone can follow the guides of installing these solar panels used to capture sunlight and generate electricity. Solar panels can be erected in gardens or they can be positioned on the rooftops or garage roofs.

Impulse Purchasing From Points of Purchase

The most effective way that has been found to have people hand over money is at a point of purchase. A lot of shopper's impulse buy when they feel the product is too good to miss. Also a point of purchase acts as a 'try before you buy' stall and this is more appealing to shoppers than a cabinet or stuffy display. A customer wants to know the ins and outs of the product they want to buy.

An example of this is found in mobile phone shops. The vast range of mobile phones that are available on the market today means that people often do not know what they are buying, what features each phone has and how easy it is to use. But the retail shop display means that with dummy phones the customer can see how the phone looks, the size and weight of the phone and whether it was what they actually wanted without having the pressure of buying there and then, but the option to walk in and buy off the shelf is also available.

However this type of point of purchasing differs from shop to shop. Depending on the product that is being sold, each display case and point of purchase unit is unique. The more expensive products such as jewelery, is kept in cabinets for obvious reasons, and has to be taken out of the case and handled with care. This could be a reason to why jewelery is taken into consideration when being purchased. The buyer has time to think about the purchase and deliberate whether it is the right choice.

The impulse purchasing from point of purchase means that businesses can have instant sales with expensive items such as televisions or everyday items such as clothes and shoes, but with cabinets and cases cater for the more unique items that consumers may need more time to think over.
